When you read Old Testament passages where God instructs the Israelites to wipe out a people – including women and children – or put to death unruly children who disrespect their parents, how do you reconcile them with Jesus’ insistence that believers must keep the law in Matthew 5:19?
That’s the difficult question posed by Bryant Wright, pastor of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga.
Pointing to Romans 1:16-17, Wright explained that our righteousness comes from God Himself through Jesus’ sacrifice on our behalf.
“When we receive the Gospel in faith, we receive the righteousness of God,” said Wright. Our righteousness then easily exceed the scribes and Pharisees because it is God’s righteousness.
All the requirements of the Old Testament are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, according to Hebrews 9:13-15, said Wright.
