The initiative, called FamilyFest, is a joint effort of the national WMU, Kentucky WMU, Boone’s Creek Baptist Association and Appalachian Regional Ministry.
FamilyFest, which brought together 227 people of all ages to help with projects ranging from home renovations to Bible studies, was created so that parents and their children could be involved in mission work together. Children as young as first grade are helping to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of Appalachian residents.
Despite its natural beauty, the Appalachian region is one of the poorest in the country. And an estimated 70 percent of the residents are unchurched.
