"In the Beginning" Book of Genesis Quilt Exhibit

First Baptist Church of Somerset will be hosting a unique art quilt exhibit titled “In the Beginning” depicting the creation of the world as reveled in the Book of Genesis. The exhibit will be open to KBC attendees on Monday and Tuesday, November 13 and 14 and displayed in the second floor walking track.

Carol Long Garver is the creator of the 20 art quilts to be displayed. Carol and her husband, Dave, live in Danville, Illinois, where he has retired from ministry and she taught art for 27 years in public school system. After retiring Carol was looking for a new interest to fill her time.

It was during a study of the Book of Genesis at their church that she was inspired to create the series of quilts depicting the creation of the earth. The COVID- 19 STAY-AT-HOME orders provided lots of time needed to complete the project.

Art quilting is an art form that uses quilting techniques to create art objects. As a beginner, Garver knew very little about quilt making techniques. She took art quilt classes, watched YouTube videos and made “lots of mistakes” to hone her skills. Garver is a “Biggie on Technique” and thinks that craftsmanship should always be at it’s best.

Each quilt in Garver’s “In the Beginning” project took lots of research, planning and sketching. The fabrics and even the threads were carefully selected, as well as the back side of each panel.

The first quilt is all blacks, grays and whites to illustrate the earth was dark, void and without form, while the second one uses hand-dyed scarves to show light and color. Subsequent quilts show the creation of the oceans, that land and sky; and plant life, fish, birds and animals that filled them. Lastly, man and woman were created.

The final panels depict the day of rest as God approved His Creation, the serpent in the Garden of Eden and the Tree of Life which are mentioned in the Books of Genesis and also Revelation.

“God, who is the great Creator, has given me the privilege of using my art to make these wall hangings to illustrate the Genesis account of the creation of our beautiful and wonderful world,” Garver said. “I hope you feel the joy I had in creating each one.”
