CP Giving Drops to 1.46 Million in October

LOUISVILLE– Kentucky Baptists’ gifts through the Cooperative Program dropped from nearly $1.8 million in September to $1.46 in October.
In the second month of the fiscal year, CP giving is more than $498,000 behind an annual workable budget goal of $22,522,814.
Lowell Ashby, leader of the Kentucky Baptist Convention Business Services Team, said it is not unexpected that October’s CP receipts were low this year, given the month ended on Monday.
When a month ends on a Monday, CP gifts from the previous Sunday are often not received until the following month.
This year’s October total was the lowest in seven years. The highest during that same period was $2.2 million in fiscal year 2007-2008.
Ashby said November’s CP receipts should reflect a carry-over from the previous month.
“November will also end the first quarter of our fiscal year and give us an opportunity to compare quarterly ‘More for Christ’ Cooperative Program receipts with the previous year,” he added.
This year Kentucky Baptists began More for Christ, www.moreforchrist.com., a three-year emphasis to challenge themselves as individuals and congregations to an increased commitment to Christ and the Great Commission.
Kentucky Baptists’ total giving for missions through the Cooperative Program in October was $1,463,615.
At the recent 174th annual meeting of the Kentucky Baptist Convention, KBC Executive Director Paul Chitwood encouraged Kentucky Baptists to “become reacquainted” with the many ministries and services funded through the Cooperative Program.
Providing resources through the Safe Church Initiative and the Preaching Values Kit are just two examples.
CP dollars made possible the information clearinghouse Safe Church Initiative to provide congregations a “one-stop shop” to help them create the safest environment possible in their churches.
At www.kybaptist.org/safechurch., there is information on everything from background checks for Sunday school teachers to flu preparedness to best practices in handling finances. Materials are available for free download and there are links to other resources.
The Preaching Values Kit is a collection of resources from the KBC Committee on Public Affairs. It includes statistics, sample Bible studies and sermons, and video testimonies of people affected by gambling.
“There are so many ways the Kentucky Baptist Convention can assist our churches, I hope as the new year approaches, people will ‘resolve’ to make the most of what we offer,” said Billy Compton, executive associate for Cooperative Program and resources.
“During this season of giving, we are grateful to Kentucky Baptists for their gifts to missions and ministries through the Cooperative Program,” he added.
