a message from Dr. Bill Mackey, executive director

Worship is an experience that cannot be captured or even easily described. It’s that sense of being totally tuned into God and focused only on Him. I recently had opportunities to experience that worshipful connection in three Kentucky Baptist churches.

The first two came as I visited the new church facilities at Hope Church in Lawrenceburg and Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington. The most outstanding experience in visiting these new facilities was not the beautiful buildings or the worship through music, however. As great as those things were, it was the pastoral preaching of expository messages that really spoke to my heart. They were two of the finest sermons that I have heard on challenging issues in living the Christian life.

At Hope Church, the music became reflective as time came for the sermon. Pastor Jeff Eaton was very relational in his presentation of a message based on I Cor. 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation He will also provide a way of escape, so that you are able to bear it.”

Jeff made it clear that temptation is common to all people and that temptation is not sin. Sin is when you choose to act on temptation.

Jeff also made it very clear that God always provides a way to escape along side the temptation because of God’s faithfulness. In conclusion, he cautioned that he was not talking about perfection but the faithfulness of God. We can choose the way of escape with God’s help.

At Ashland Avenue, there was also great music in an impressive building and a true spirit of worship. In his sermon from Proverbs, Pastor David Prince focused on godly use of the tongue. David described how people misuse words and challenged the people to be responsible. The application that captured me was that our words are always to bring praise and glory to God.

The third experience of worship was at Memorial Baptist Church in Frankfort where I had the privilege of being a part of a special recording of the 10 favorite hymns and praise songs of the congregation. Music minister Rod Ellis had made all arrangements and it was obvious to me that everyone was prepared to engage in authentic worship.

Pastor Chuck Beighle sang with the choir and provided prayers and a brief message. Worship was followed by a groundbreaking for a $2 million addition and renovation of present facilities.

I praise God for authentic worship and faithful proclamation of the word of God. It is not optional; it is a matter of spiritual health and life!
