1—Welcome to worship today! I am so glad you could join us. Tell me some ways that you know it is Fall. (Listen for responses) We see many changes around us during early Fall. The leaves begin to turn colors, the weather gets cooler, and it gets darker earlier in the evening…. Many things change in our world, but there is one thing that will never change. Listen to our story today and find out what never changes. The Bible tells us (please have your Bible open) in Mark chapter 10 that Jesus had worked hard. He was probably tired. His disciples saw parents and children trying to get to Jesus. The parents probably wanted Jesus to bless their children. The disciples tried to keep the families away from Jesus. Perhaps they tried to explain how tired Jesus was. Then Jesus saw what was happening. Jesus was not pleased with His disciples. He told them not to send the children away. (Read verse 14.) The Bible tells us that Jesus touched the children and blessed them. When it seems that everything is changing around you, remember that Jesus always loves you. (Pray thanking God for always loving us.)
Suggested song after this sermon is “Jesus Loves Me.”
2—Welcome! Thank you for joining us for the Children’s Sermon today. Our story this morning comes from the Bible in Luke chapter 10. Jesus was walking through a village where some of His friends lived. Jesus stopped to have dinner with His good friends. There were two sisters and one brother in this family. They were Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Now, we know that Jesus did not travel alone in this story. We know His disciples were there and maybe some the other people who had been listening to Jesus. Martha was in the kitchen making a beautiful dinner. Maybe she was having fun at first, but then she probably got tired. Her sister Mary was not helping in the kitchen. Mary was sitting down listening to Jesus talk. Martha went to Jesus and told Him that she really needed Mary’s help. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to come and help her. Jesus looked at Martha and told her that she worried about a lot of stuff, but Mary knew what was really important. Making dinner was important, but stopping and listening to Jesus was even more important. Read Luke 10:39. No matter how busy life gets, remember the most important thing we can do is to take time to listen to Jesus. We can listen to Him as we read the Bible, pray and listen to other people who love Jesus. (Pray asking God to help us to listen to Him.)
Suggested song after this sermon is “Oh How I love Jesus.”
3—Good morning! Thank you for being at church today. I want to tell you a story that comes from the Bible in the book of Mark. (Open your Bible to Mark 6:30-46.) The story starts out when the disciples had just come back to Jesus. Jesus had sent them out and God had been with them. He had helped them. Many miracles had happened. They had told many people about Jesus. Everything was going well and they came back to Jesus. Everybody was really tired. Jesus told them that they would find a quiet place to rest. They got in a boat and they were going across some water and some people saw them. A lot of people saw them. While they were in the boat, the people that were on the land began to run so they could see Jesus and His friends. Before Jesus and the disciples could get to the other side, the people were waiting for them. Remember Jesus and His friends were very tired. Jesus looked at the people and He loved them. He began to teach them. Now the Bible says that by this time it was very late in the day and the people had not eaten. Remember that the disciples had just come back from doing some really neat things. They told Jesus to send the people home. They were out in the countryside and there was no food for them to eat. The people had to be hungry. Jesus told the disciples to feed the people. Wow!, the disciples must have thought. That would be hard. It would take working eight months just to feed the people. Jesus told the disciples to go and see what they could find to eat. The Bible says that all they were able to find was five loaves of bread and two fish. Maybe the disciples forgot for a minute that God had worked through them and that Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus took the food and prayed. Then He passed out the food. The disciples helped Him. There was plenty of food. There were 5,000 men and maybe even 10,000 if the women and children had been counted. Not only did everybody have enough to eat, but there were twelve big baskets full left over. Do you think that the disciples forgot that Jesus was there and that He could take care of everything? Do we sometimes forget that Jesus is with us? Jesus is with us and we can talk with Him. (Pray thanking God for taking care of us. Ask Him to help us remember that He is with us.)
Suggested song is “God is So Good.”
4--I am so glad you came up front today. I appreciate it very much. I hope that you know that you are very important to God and to our church family. I am glad you are here. What is your favorite day of the year? (Listen to responses.) One really important day to you is probably your birthday. Why? Do you know that the date that you were born was important, even before you were born? Your parents looked forward to that day for a long time. That day might even have been circled on the calendar before you were born. You were special to your parents before you were even born. Do you know Who else thought that you were special before you were ever born? The Bible tells us in Psalm 139 that God knew about us even before we were born and that He thinks about us all the time. God loves us and cares about us. He even knows us by name. He knows all about us and still loves us. Read Psalm 139:17-18. Your birthday is important to you. You are important to God. (Pray thanking God that He loves us and cares about us and knows us by name. Ask Him to help us remember this week that He knows all about us and still loves us.)
Suggested song is “I Love Thee.”
1—Good morning! Thank you for joining us for worship today. This month we want to talk about giving thanks. Remembering to say thank you is very important. We like to hear these words and so do other people. Even God enjoys hearing people say thank you. Writing or drawing thank you notes is a very kind way to say thank you to other people. I brought a thank you card with me today and I would like for you to help me think of things that we can thank God for. (Write down responses from the children.) The Bible tells us to give thanks (read I Chronicles 16:8). Remember to say thank you to God. Now let’s pray thanking God for these things. (Pray thanking God for what was mentioned.)
Suggested song is “Count your many blessings.”
2--Good morning! Thank you for joining us for the children’s sermon today. All during the month of November we are talking about giving thanks. Do you remember what we did last week? (Remind them about listing things to say thank you to God for.) Many people have written about giving thanks to God. One of them was a lady named Helen Keller. She was blind, deaf and could not speak. She said that she was thankful to God for her disabilities because they helped her to know Him better. Other people say that the most important thing to be thankful for is love because there is never too much love. Karl Barth was a minister and a teacher. He loved to teach people how to be better Christians. He wrote a lot of books. Karl Barth said that the most important thing is life is to be thankful. Some people agree with him and others do not. Some people think that we should love one another, others say we should go to church and tell other people about Jesus. All of these were important to Mr. Barth and to us. He felt that the best thing we could do was to be thankful for all God has done for us. When we are thankful for God’s love, we are going to love each other. When we come to church, we will want to bring others with us. We will live like Jesus. Let’s pray together. (Pray asking God to help us to be truly thankful and to help us live like Jesus.)
Suggested song is “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.”
3--Good morning! I am glad you are with us today. Who can tell me what we will celebrate this Thursday? On the fourth Thursday in November we celebrate Thanksgiving. How do we celebrate Thanksgiving? (Listen to responses.) Sometimes we get together with family and friends and enjoy eating together. Sometimes we watch football or clean up together after a big meal. It might be easy to forget what the day is really all about. We need to remember to be truly thankful to God for His gifts. We need to be thankful that we live in a country where we can pray and thank God outloud for all He has done for us. There is a psalm that some people call the thanksgiving psalm. Let’s read it. (Read Psalm 100.) Let’s pray together. (Pray thanking God for His forever love for us.)
Suggested song is “Praise Him, Praise Him.”
4—Welcome to worship today! Thank you for joining us. Does anyone know what one-month from today will be? (Listen for responses.) Exactly, one month from today it will be Christmas. A month seems like a long time to wait. Have you ever had to wait a long time for something? Do you know that your parents waited for you for a long time? They waited months after they found out you were coming until you arrived. The Bible tells us that people waited for another Baby for a long time. People waited for this Baby for hundreds of years. Do you know this Baby’s Name? He has many names. Read Isaiah 9:6. Isaiah told us about this Baby. His Name is Jesus. Prophets told that Jesus would come hundreds of years before He was born. People looked forward to His coming and now we look back and remember His birthday. As you wait for Christmas to arrive; remember that Christmas really is all about celebrating Jesus. (Pray together thanking God for loving us so much that He sent Jesus.)
Suggested song is “Tell me the story of Jesus.” (If your church uses the Advent Wreath, this sermon could be used for the Prophets’ candle.)
| December—Happy Birthday, Jesus! |
1--Welcome! I am glad that you are here today. Today is December 2nd. Are you looking forward to anything? (Listen for responses.) I am looking forward to Christmas. Last week we talked about the prophets and the people who looked forward to Jesus coming. Today we are going to talk about another part of the Christmas story. We are going to talk about angels. (Show the angel, if you brought one.) There are many angels in the Christmas story; today we will talk about four times they are talked about. An old man named Zechariah was a priest and he loved God very much. One day while he was praying, an angel came to him and told him that he and his wife were going to have a baby. The angel even told him to name the baby John. This baby would introduce Jesus to the world. Zechariah and Elizabeth were old, but God blessed them with baby John. An angel came to Mary and told her that she would have a baby, too, and that this baby would be God’s Son. The angel also told her what to name the Baby. His name would be Jesus. An angel went to Joseph with the good news. Then, remember the night that Jesus was born? The shepherds were out in the fields. The Bible says that many angels came and happily told them that Jesus had been born. Each time the angels came, they told the people not to be afraid and then gave the message. Just like the angels we can rejoice that Jesus was born. (Pray thanking God for sending Jesus.)
Suggested song is “Go, tell it on the Mountain.”
2---Thank you for joining us for worship today and for coming up front for the Children’s Sermon. We have been talking about the Christmas story for a few weeks now. Right after Thanksgiving we talked about people who told us that Jesus would come. Who were these people? That’s right, the prophets told us that Jesus would come hundreds of years before He was born. Last week we talk about some messages. Who delivered these messages about Jesus? Yes, the angels told people about Jesus. Last week, at the end of the sermon we talked about a time when many angels gathered together. Do you remember who got the message that night? That’s right, the shepherds received the message. Listen to the scripture. Read Luke 2:8. At night, an angel of the Lord appeared to them and the Bible says the shepherds were terrified. What do you think the angel told them? “Do not be afraid.” They had the best news the world had ever known for the shepherds and for everyone. That very day Jesus had been born. The angel told the shepherds that they would see the Baby wrapped up in cloths and lying in a manger. Right then a whole bunch of angels joined the angel and praised God. When the angels left them, the shepherds went to Bethlehem to see the Baby. They found Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. The shepherds were the first people to know that Jesus had been born. The angels could have gone to kings or other important people, but God chose the angels to go to some very important people, the shepherds, who were ordinary every day people. The angels told the shepherds that Jesus was born for everybody. (Pray thanking God that He sent Jesus for everyone.)
Suggested song is “O, Come All Ye Faithful.”
3—Good morning! I am so glad you came up front today for the Children’s Sermon. It is an exciting time of year. What are we all getting ready for? We are preparing for Christmas, the time that we celebrate the birth of Jesus. We have already talked about three parts of this story. What are they? We have talked about the prophets, the angels and the shepherds. Today, we want to talk about something that was in the sky in the story. Do you know what that was? Yes, the star that shined over the place where Jesus and His family were staying. (Please have your Bible open to Matthew 2.) After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Magi came from the East to Jerusalem and asked about the birth of the king of the Jews. They had seen His star in the east and had come to worship Him. King Herod was not too happy about a Jewish king being born. He asked some very wise men and asked them where the king could have been born. They told Herod about the prophecy that the kind would be born in Bethlehem. Herod asked the Magi when they had seen the star and sent them on their way. As the Magi traveled, the star that they had seen in the east went ahead of them and stopped over the place where Jesus was. The Bible says that when they saw the star they were overjoyed. The Magi saw Jesus with His mother, Mary. They bowed down and worshiped Him. They gave Him many treasures. God sent the star to help these people find Jesus. (Pray thanking God that He sent Jesus for all of us.)
Suggested song is "We Three Kings of Orient Are.”
4—Welcome to worship today! There are just a few more days until Christmas, the day that we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Last week we talked about the Magi who brought treasure to Jesus. Today I want to tell you a story written by a man named O. Henry called “The Gift of the Magi.” Two dollars and thirty-seven cents was all she had and it was Christmas Eve. This was the first Christmas that Amy and Matthew were together. They had been married a few months earlier and each of them looked forward to a special day. Amy and Matt were poor in many ways, but they were rich because they had each other. They also had two treasures. One was Amy’s beautiful long hair. Beauticians often asked her to allow them to cut her hair and they would pay her a great price. Her hair would be perfect to make into a wig. The other treasure was Matt’s lovely pocket watch that his father had given him. Amy made the decision; she left the house to get her hair cut. She did not even look in the mirror when it was done; she just left and went to the jewelry store. She bought a chain for Matt’s pocket watch. At the same time, Matt was at work with no money at all. He wanted to give Amy a wonderful present. He went to the jewelry store and sold his watch. He bought Amy two beautiful barrettes. They would look wonderful in her hair. When he arrived home, the young couple exchanged gifts. Matt received a chain, but he had no pocket watch. Amy received two barrettes that were too heavy to be worn in her short hair. They laughed together and then realized that they had given their most important treasures for each other. God gave us His most important treasure when He gave us Jesus. (Pray thanking God for sending Jesus.)
Suggested song is “Joy to the World.”
4—Welcome! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I hope that you remembered to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Bible tells us in Luke 2 that when Jesus was eight days old Mary and Joseph took Him to the temple. They gave Him the name of Jesus, just like the angels had said. There was an old man at the temple named Simeon. He loved God very much. When Simeon saw Jesus, he picked the Baby up in his arms and praised God. Simeon knew that Jesus was God’s Son. A lady named Anna was also there and she was very old. She worshiped God all day every day at the temple. She came up to the family and Simeon at the same time. She also knew that Jesus was God’s Son. Read Luke 2:40. Anna and Simeon knew Who Jesus was and we still know Jesus today. (Pray thanking God for Jesus.)
Suggested song is “What Child is This."
