July Theme – Fun Time in God’s World
July 7 - Celebration
1 Samuel 11:15
1 Peter 2:16
This past week we celebrated a very important day. Can anyone tell me what we celebrated? The 4th of July – Do you know why we celebrate the 4th of July? Freedom! What does freedom mean? We live in a country where we can come to church to worship God; on our own home; go to school; and do what we want to as long as we do not break laws or hurt anyone.
America is a wonderful place to live!
Prayer - Dear God, Thank you for us to have freedom to do things in America. Amen.
Suggested song: “America the Beautiful”
July 14 - Climbing a Tree
Deuteronomy 20:19
(Hold up a picture of a tree) What is this? Excellent! It is a picture of a tree. Many children like to climb trees.
What do you see when you climb a tree? What grows on a tree? Very good. Cherries, apples, oranges, pears, bananas, grapefruits, peaches and other fruits, nuts, pinecones and flowers grow on trees.
God’s world is filled with growing things. As you go this week look at the trees to see what is growing on them and remember that the tree and what is growing on it is a part of God’s world!
Prayer - Dear God, thank you for all the beautiful trees that you give fruit to eat. Amen.
Suggested song: “God, Who Made the Earth”
July 21 - Chasing Butterflies
Psalms 50:1-2
Ecclesiastes 3:11
This week we are going to talk about another fun time in God’s world. Watching and chasing butterflies. How many of you have chased butterflies? Did you know that your family can build a butterfly house and plant flowers in your garden to attract the butterflies?
Butterflies are among God’s most interesting and beautiful creatures. It takes a while for a butterfly to get ready to come into this world from a cocoon. Butterflies are very gentle creatures and will sometimes land on your hand or your shoulder.
God makes many different kinds of butterflies – white, black, brown, red, yellow and mixed-colors – just like people. God made people in different colors and all sizes. Butterflies come in all sizes – tiny, medium and large. In the rainforest there are 1500 different kinds of butterflies.
God’s beautiful World. He made it for you, He made it for me. God’s beautiful World.
Prayer - Dear God, thank you for your beautiful world. Amen.
Suggested song: “All Things Bright and Beautiful”
July 28 – Sharing
John 6:9
How many of you like to go fishing? Have you ever caught a fish? What did you do with your fish? Did you cook and eat it or throw it back in the water. Today we are going to talk about a little boy who had been fishing and caught two fish.
One day Jesus was talking to a large group of people. When lunchtime came He wanted to give his friends something to eat, but He did not have any food for this group. There was a little boy there who had caught the fish and he had some bread.
The little boy gave his fish and bread to Jesus. Jesus thanked God for the food, which was shared with many people. You know the little boy could have been selfish and kept the food for himself since it was so small, but he wanted to share. I’m sure he felt great!
Jesus wants us to share with others and we can learn to feel good when we help others. What a happy day for this young boy!
Prayer – Dear God, help me to share with those in need. Amen.
Suggested song – “I’m Just a Child”
August Theme – Back to School
August 4 – Jesus Going to School
Luke 2:46-47
Did you ever wonder about Jesus going to school? We know that Jewish boys in Jesus’ time were taught by rabbis at the temple, so Jesus went to school.
The Bible tells us in Luke 2:46-47 “After three days they found Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard Him was amazed at his understanding and His answers”.
Jesus knew God in a more special way than any of the teachers because God was Jesus’ Father who sent Him to earth. Jesus knew that its important to be in church and learning about God.
It is important that we study and learn so our minds will grow with knowledge.
Prayer – Dear God, we thank you for our schools and teachers that help us to learn. Amen.
Suggested Song: “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus”
August 11 – Learners
Isaiah 1:17
We are going to talk about learning. What do you think it means to be a learner? How many of you are learners?
I have three questions to ask:
Number one: Who is the pastor of our church?
Number two: In what town is our church located?
Number three: What book do we read to learn more about Jesus?
Good job! Give yourself a pat on the back. You all seem to be learners for none of you came into the world knowing these answers.
Each year as you go to school you grow taller and bigger. That’s easy to see. It’s not as easy to see that our minds are growing too! Isaiah 1:17 says “Let us learn well.” It’s important that we study and learn so our minds will grow full with knowledge. We also need to learn about God. What are some ways to learn more about God? Thank you for your answers. We can pray, read our Bible, and come to church. We can become learners and be filled with knowledge about God.
Prayer – Dear God, You show us that it is important to study and learn not only at school but also at church. Be with us this week as we learn. Let us become learners to please you. Amen.
Suggested song – “Saviour Teach Me Day by Day”
August 18 – Pencils remind us to start over
Matthew 18:27
Today I have a pencil (show one with an eraser) in my hand. What do you do with a pencil? (Wait for a response) Great! You draw, color, or write with it. It’s very useful, isn’t it?
We need pencils for our work in school and at home. What is your favorite thing to do with a pencil? Wonderful! Draw, print, and write. What happens when you print, write or draw something and make a mistake? (Wait for a response) That’s right. You use the eraser on the other end of the pencil and start over.
Erasers are really neat! They help us to wipe out the mistake and start over. That’s what happens when we make a mistake at home and ask Mom and Dad to forgive us. They say “yes” and we get to start over. Forgiveness is like an eraser. Our parents forgive us when we are bad or do something wrong, and we get to start over. God forgives us, when we ask Him for forgiveness. We get to start over.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for letting us start over. Amen.
Suggested song – “To God be the Glory”
August 25 – Honesty, one of God’s Rules
Exodus 20:15
One of God’s rules says we are not to steal. What does steal mean? (Wait for response) That’s very good. It means we are not to take anything that does not belong to us. (Hold up a pencil) What is this? Correct, it is a pencil. There are several ways I could have gotten this pencil. I could have bought it. I could have borrowed it from a friend. I could have found it on the floor in the classroom, or I could have stolen it. But stealing it would be wrong, not honest, against God’s rule. And if I had found it at school, I should take it to the teacher so she could find out who had lost it. If I had borrowed
the pencil, I should return it. Actually, I bought the pencil, which is the way many of us get our pencils.
Prayer – Dear God, help us to be honest in all we do. Amen.
Song – “All that Thrills my Soul”
September Theme – Church Words
September 1 – Church
Ephesians 5:25
Today we will talk about a word we hear several times a week –- church. Church is a place or a building where we come to worship God. However there are some places where people have church under a tree, a tent, a storefront, in a home, etc. Church is more than a building. It is the people that come together for a common purpose to worship God. If our church was empty on Sunday what good would it do in our community?
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for letting us worship you and be a special place in our community. Amen.
Suggested song: “The Church’s One Foundation”
September 8 – Church Family
Ephesians 3:15
Today we are going to talk about our church family. (Hold up church directory) What is this? Yes, this is a book with pictures of our church families. Some of you and your families are in this book.
What is a family? A family can be people who live together and who love each other and look after each other. (You might want to tell about who is in your family.)
Family can mean people who believe alike, who love one another, but live in different houses – like our church family. There are many families living in many different houses, but when we all come to church we are a family because we love and care for one another.
You are a member of your family with your mom, dad, brother, and sister. You are also a member of this church family.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for our church family. Amen.
Suggested song: “In the Family of God”
September 15 – Attendance
Psalms 122:1
On Sunday morning many people are busy moving around their homes trying to get breakfast eaten, baths, teeth brushed, clothes on, and piling into the car to church. I imagine it the same at your house. It takes a lot of energy to get ready to come to church. Sometimes it is easier to stay at home. If we don’t come to Sunday School and church what will we miss? We would not see our friends, we would miss seeing our Sunday School teacher, listening to our favorite Bible story, and not have our children’s time together. This time together every Sunday morning in worship is very important to me. When I don’t get to see you and talk with you, I become very sad and really miss you. God misses you when you are not at worship time.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for the time we are here at church to worship you. Amen.
Suggested song: “Day by Day”
September 22 – Sanctuary/Auditorium/Worship Center
Exodus 25:8
We have discussed the words: church, church family, attendance, and today we talk about the sanctuary, auditorium or worship center. They are big words. This is the place were we are now. The sanctuary, auditorium or worship center is where the choir sings and the preacher preaches the sermon on Sunday.
Sometimes we confuse the word church with sanctuary, auditorium or worship center. All the rooms and buildings we use are referred to as “church”. Where you have your Sunday School is part of our church building.
The way you can tell a sanctuary, auditorium or worship center is to look how the chairs and pews are arranged. The pulpit is where the preacher puts his Bible when he preaches. The offering plates remind us to give our money for God’s work. The choir leads us in music about God and the world. The flowers at the front remind us of God’s beauty of nature. The cross helps us to remember Jesus’ love for us. The baptistery shows us of people who accept Jesus to follow Him, and the organ and piano produce beautiful sounds to help us with our singing and meditation.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for a place that we can focus on your love for us. Amen.
Suggested song: “To Worship, Work, and Witness”
September 29 – Minister
1 Corinthians 12:28
Our church word today is minister. Who is our minister? What does he do? You are right. He preaches sermons and visits people who are sick, performs weddings, and funerals as well as talks to people in need. Ministers are people who believe God wants them to preach, teach, and show what God is like.
Ministers go to school to study about God and they keep on studying even when they go to work in a church. They study hard so they will know what to teach.
Some churches have more than one minister. (Name the ones in your church and tell what they do.) Some ministers preach and teach. Some ministers work with the choirs and music programs and some have ministers for youth, children and preschoolers.
Prayer – Dear God, thank you for our ministers. Amen.
Suggested song: “O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee”
