Young Statesman Scholarship

The Baptist Men’s Department of the Kentucky Baptist Convention wants to support the growth of On Mission Youth though helping them go to college. The Young Statesman Scholarship is an award opportunity for High School Seniors, male and female, to compete for $1,000 each year for up to four years at the college of their choice. The scholarship can be paid to you or the college. One new scholarship will be available each year. The purpose is to encourage Christian youth to analyze and research a life issue so that they can establish a position and effectively communicate their conclusions. Young people, take a stand and make it stick! An endowment is being set up at the Kentucky Baptist Foundation to provide for this scholarship.

To compete for the scholarship, students will give a six to eight minute speech. Speeches will be judged on six criteria:
  • Evidence of research (15 pts);
  • Development of ideas (50 pts);
  • Use of gestures (10 pts);
  • Delivery (15 pts);
  • and Conclusion (10 pts).

A minimum of 85 points is necessary for making the award.

Each participant will select one of six topics that the Baptist Men’s Department has chosen. Speeches will be given at one of the annual State Royal Ambassador/Challenger Congresses. Participants will turn in a completed application and manuscript by March 15th. The speeches will be video taped at the Congress. Tapes and manuscripts will be held for judging in the Baptist Men’s office until after all congresses. Students must register before March 15th to participate in the competition.

Eligible seniors can be in public, private or home school, but must be actively involved in missions education in their local church. He/she has to attend college the following Fall semester. The winner of the Young Statesman Scholarship agrees to deliver the speech again at the Celebrate The Mission in October.

After their freshmen year, students can continue to receive the scholarship for up to three more years. Students will need to provide written evidence that they continue to be leaders in missions efforts and spiritual development. Examples include involvement in Baptist Campus Ministry, Summer Missions, mission projects and leadership in a local church.
