LOUISVILLE – As relief efforts continue in Texas following Hurricane Ike, the Kentucky Baptist Convention is sending 19 new volunteers to Angleton to relieve a team of Kentucky Baptist volunteers stationed there since Sept. 19.
According to Coy Webb, disaster relief associate for the KBC, the team left Sept. 26 and will be based out of Second Baptist Church, Angleton, upon arrival in Texas.
Webb said it is not certain how long the volunteers will serve in Angleton, an area outside of Houston. The volunteers will provide relief through the kitchen, communications and shower units already on site.
The new team includes volunteers from Bardstown, Benton, Bowling Green, Cadiz, Frankfort, Taylorsville, Hardin, Kuttawa, Lawrenceburg and Mayfield.
Webb said another Kentucky team previously stationed at Friendship Baptist Church in the Woodlands of Texas will be moving on Sept. 27 to League City, Texas, in Galveston County. The team of 12 Henderson volunteers are working with a feeding unit and will continue to serve there until Sept. 30.
Relief efforts in Kentucky are now wrapping up, Webb said, noting that 91 Kentucky Baptist disaster relief volunteers from Livermore and Owensboro helped provide relief to residents in those areas after Hurricane Ike windstorms swept across Kentucky on Sept. 7.

Kentucky Baptists are part of a larger network of Southern Baptist volunteers trained to respond to disasters by manning mass feeding operations, using chainsaws to clear downed trees and limbs, clear mud out of flooded homes and more. Together, Southern Baptists comprise the third largest relief organization in the United States.
