KBC Disaster Relief Volunteers Head to Iowa
Release Date: 06/13/2008

WAPELLO, Iowa – Two Kentucky Baptist volunteers are joining other Southern Baptists to provide disaster relief in areas affected by floods this week in Iowa.

According to Coy Webb, disaster relief associate for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, two Hopkinsville residents will be serving with a shower unit for one week and will be based in Wapello. The unit is designed to provide showers for other relief workers, as well as laundry facilities.

No additional volunteers are needed for the Iowa effort at this time, said Webb, but the KBC remains on standby to help provide further assistance if needed.

Kentucky Baptists are part of a larger network of Southern Baptist volunteers trained to respond to disasters by manning mass feeding operations, using chainsaws to clear downed trees and limbs, clear mud out of flooded homes and more.

Southern Baptist disaster relief volunteers work in conjunction with other organizations, such as the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Together, Southern Baptists compose the third largest relief organization in the United States.
