State High School Bible Drill

June 19
National Youth Bible Drill
First Baptist Church
Covington, Louisiana

Purpose
High School Bible Drill is designed to assist youth in grade 10-12 to develop useful skills and knowledge of the Bible, as well as poise and self-confidence. By participating in the drills, youth will learn to find books of the Bible, locate scripture references, learn three different approaches of the Plan of Salvation, and use scripture references to document basic beliefs and ethical convictions. Older youth participating in High School Bible Drill may also participate in Speakers Tournament.

The most important goal of High School Bible Drill is to learn to use the Scripture to make a difference for today and tomorrow.

Working together to prepare for the drill, teenagers increase their love for the Bible; its words and phrases become a part of them.

Participants
Students in 10th through 12th grades who are sponsored by a Kentucky Baptist Convention are eligible to participate.

Judging
A drill leader (conductor), three regular point judges, a bonus point judge, and a timekeeper are used. Each judge will score all participants, maximum of 12. In scoring, when there’s a question, the judging team will give participants the benefit of the doubt. The conductor is the only one that confirms a memory response by “That is Correct” or “Please try again” (one extra chance only). If a driller cannot give the proper response, the conductor will ask the group to respond in unison. If the group is a mixed group (KJV, NIV), the conductor will give the correct response. All other judging issues are the responsibility of the judges and the conductor will refrain from any comments of any kind in reference to mistakes during the drill.

Regular point judges will indicate a correct response by leaving the box blank. Judges will place a number (1-5) in the appropriate box to indicate a mistake. Each regular point judge will score the entire group.

Bonus Point Judge – on each call, the participant who steps out first scores one bonus point. In case of a tie, bonus points are given to each. The judge scoring bonus points will place a 1 in the appropriate box. If a person receiving a bonus point makes a mistake, cancel it with an X.

*NOTE: Regular points are totaled & averaged then bonus points added.

Drill Commands
In conducting a High School Bible Drill, conductors will use the following commands:

“Attention” -The participant will stand erect with one foot not extended in front of the other, hands by side, head up, eyes on the leader, and Bible in either hand at side.

“Present Bible” -Participant brings the Bible to waistline. The Bible should be parallel to the floor with one hand flat on the top and one hand flat on the bottom with no thumbs or fingers extending over the edges. Following “Present Bibles”, the conductor announces the call. The call is stated twice, and no questions can be asked after the second call.

“Start” -This command is the signal for participants to begin searching. In the Book Drill, the index finger must be placed upon any verse in that book. In other drills, the driller finds the verse, places his index finger on the verse, and steps forward. It is a mistake to begin any movement before “Start” is called.

“Time” -A timekeeper calls out the word “time” at the end of 8 seconds. The full 8 seconds is given on each call. There is to be no “All Out” called to shorten the drill. This is to allow the participant the full measure of time to collect his thoughts before being called upon. No one may step forward after “time” is called, and all participants should stop searching. (When time is called, in the Steps to Salvation, What We Believe, and Key Biblical Passage Drills, the conductor will instruct the drillers to close their Bibles). The conductor will call upon one driller to respond.

“Attention” -The conductor gives the command “Attention”. The drillers return to their original positions, Bibles held at side.

Mistakes
1. Fails to STEP FORWARD within 8 seconds.

2. Gives an INCORRECT RESPONSE (includes any driller who raises a hand indicating an error). It is an error to step out, then step back, then step out again even if it is in the allotted time.

3. Fails to STAND STRAIGHT, keep his EYES ON THE CONDUCTOR, or BEGINS ANY MOVEMENT before the command “Start” is given.

4. Steps forward before the INDEX FINGER is on the correct response.

5. Fails to handle the Bible according to instructions or ABUSES THE BIBLE.

* NOTE: At each drill level, scores are totaled, and then averaged before bonus points are added.

Types of Drills
The scriptures for Steps to Salvation Drill, What We Believe Drill, and Key Biblical Passage Drill are found on the scripture card “High School Bible Drill Verses (Cycle 1).”

A complete drill consists of 5 types of drills with calls in each type. The Bible is used throughout the drill. The types of drills are listed, along with the number of calls and point value of each call.

Book Drill: 5 calls/2 points
The conductor calls the name of any book in the Bible. At the command “Start,” participants begin searching for that book. A participant places his index finger on any verse in that book and he steps forward. When called upon, he should be able to name the book preceding the book called, the book called, and the book following the book called.

Scripture Searching Drill: 5 calls/4 points
The conductor announces a scripture reference to be found. Scripture searching drills are taken from any part of the Bible A participant must locate the scripture reference and place his index finger on the verse before stepping forward. When called upon, he must read the verse and state the scripture reference. Reading ability is not judged.

Steps to Salvation Drill: 6 calls/4 points
All six verses will be called out in the order listed. The purpose of this drill is to help youth recall verses in order to share the plan of salvation with someone. The conductor will quote the reference of a verse in this section. A participant must correctly locate the verse and place his index finger on the verse before he steps forward. When called upon, he will close his Bible, recite the verse, and give the scripture reference.

What We Believe Drill: 5 calls/5 points
The conductor will announce a question taken from the official What We Believe Drill verses (see card). A participant must correctly locate the verse listed that answers the question and place his index finger on the verse before he steps forward. When time is called, the conductor will instruct the participants to close their Bibles. When called upon, the participant must be able to quote the question, recite the correct verse(s), and state the Scripture reference.

Key Biblical Passage Drill: 3 calls/7 points
The conductor will call out the title of a passage in this section. A participant must correctly locate the verses associated with it and place his index finger on any verse in this passage before he steps forward. They will then when called upon recite the title of the passage, give the reference and when called on will read the verse requested.
At the National will, when called upon, he will close his Bible, recite the title of the passage, quote the complete passage, and give the reference.

**Time Limit: 8 seconds**

Mistakes and Bonus points scored the same way.

Number of Judges – 4 (3 regular points, 1 bonus point)

Bibles
Churches in Kentucky have the option of using either the King James Version or the New International Version Bibles. Churches using the King James Version should use the KJV Drill Bible (Lifeway order No. 0-8798-1600-7) and churches using the New International Version should use the “burgundy” Bible from the International Bible Society item #172. (Lifeway has discontinued carrying the NIV bible drill Bibles). The above Bibles will be used at State and National Events.
