| Release Date: 05/20/2008 |
FRANKFORT – The Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service has selected the Kentucky Baptist Convention’s Kentucky Changers program as the recipient of the Faith-Based Group Award.
Kentucky Changers was one of 17 recipients of the 2007 Governor’s Volunteer Awards, presented by First Lady Jane Beshear during a May 9 ceremony at the state Capitol in Frankfort.
“Volunteers add tremendous value to the lives they touch and the communities they serve,” Beshear said. “I want to thank you all for the difference you make and the example you set by carrying on one of Kentucky’s most cherished traditions, lending a hand to a neighbor in need.”
The Faith-Based Group Award recognizes a group of volunteers that has demonstrated significant volunteer service and is coordinated through a faith community organization in Kentucky.
Kentucky Changers received the award for the Monticello/Wayne County project, completed in July of 2007. More than 200 volunteers participated in the effort, completing renovations on 20 low-income homes.
A panel of judges with volunteer and community service backgrounds chose 17 winners in 15 categories. The Governor’s Office launched the volunteer awards program in 1975.
Sponsored by the Kentucky Baptist Convention, the Kentucky Changers program provides a weeklong missions experience for teenagers, college students and adults. Participants complete light construction work for low-income families. Since the program’s inception in 1994, thousands of students have participated in projects across the state.
