| Rice Called to Pastorate at First Baptist Church, Shelbyville |
| Release Date: 10/02/2008 |
LOUISVILLE – Steve Rice, director of discipleship and assimilation for the Kentucky Baptist Convention, has accepted a pastoral call to First Baptist Church, Shelbyville.
Rice was confirmed as senior pastor by a church vote on Sept. 28. He originally came to the KBC in January of 2007, having previously served as pastor of Williamstown Baptist Church.
“Steve will be greatly missed by the Mission Board staff and by Kentucky Baptist churches,” said Church Development Team Leader Alan Witham. “He did a great job in raising the bar in the areas of discipleship and assimilation, deacon ministry and bi-vocational ministry.”
Noting that Rice had a “commitment to excellence in his work,” Witham said Rice’s efforts helped churches focus on the need to “open the front door and close the back door.”
“Steve has helped emphasize how important it is for churches to connect with visitors and follow up with them once they become members,” he said.
“He will be missed, but we are glad for First Baptist Church of Shelbyville. They are getting a good pastor,” said Witham.
During his time with the KBC’s Mission Board staff, Rice was instrumental in assisting churches across the state increase their effectiveness in discipleship. Rice also worked to provide resources and guidance for churches seeking to involve all members in ministry.
In his role, Rice also provided leadership for deacon ministries and support to bi-vocational pastors across the state.
Rice holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Mid-America Baptist Seminary, a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Rice Seminary, and a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University.
The Kentucky Baptist Convention is a cooperative missions and ministry organization made up of more than 2,400 autonomous Baptist churches in Kentucky.
