April Theme - Jesus Grew
April 7
Good morning. I am happy to see you today. The next four Sundays we are going to talk about growing. (Open your Bible to Luke 2:52). The Bible says, “Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.”

I know a little boy named Eddy (insert the name of a young preschooler you know). Eddy is a year and a half old now. When he was born, Eddy only knew how to do a few things. Most of the time he just drank from a bottle and slept. But Eddy has learned a lot. Now he can feed himself, and he drinks from a cup. He has learned to walk, and he chases the cat. He has also learned to smile, and he gives great hugs.

Eddy still has many things to learn. Someday, when he is older, he will be able to get dressed all by himself. He does not know how to ride a bike yet, and he cannot read. He does not know how to add, and he can’t find Kentucky on a map. We tell Eddy Bible stories, but he has not learned any Bible verses yet. But Eddy does learn something new every day, just like you do.

There are many things God wants you to learn. Jesus learned all He could, and when He grew up He was able to do all of the things God wanted Him to do. We need to learn everything we can, so that when we grow up we will be able to do all of the things God wants us to do. (Pray thanking God for minds to learn).

Suggested Song: “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus”

April 14
(Collect a picture of Jesus as an infant, one of Him in the temple at age 12 and two or three of Him as an adult. These may be located in a Children’s Illustrated Bible, or in your Sunday School Resource file. As you show each picture, turn it upside-down in your lap, or turn the pages of the Bible to the scene you wish to show.)

Good morning. Today I have brought some pictures of Jesus for us to see. (Name each scene, making sure every child is able to see the pictures.) Did you know we do not really know what Jesus looked like? There were no cameras then to take pictures of Him. But we do know some things about Jesus. We know that He was an infant, and then He was a young boy. Later He became a teenager, and finally He became a man. (Open your Bible to Luke 2:52). The Bible says, “Jesus increased…in stature.” That means He grew tall and strong.

What are some things you need to grow tall and strong? (Acknowledge answers. These may include such things as food, rest, and exercise.) Jesus needed all of these things to grow too. Let’s thank God for giving us all of the things we need to grow tall and strong, just like Jesus did. (Prayer)

Suggested Song: “Count Your Blessings”

April 21
Good morning. We have been talking about Jesus as a young boy. We know that Jesus studied and learned, and that He grew taller and stronger. (Open your Bible to Luke 2:52.) The Bible tells us, “Jesus increased…in favor with God.” That means He learned to please God.

Can you think of some things we can do that please God? (Acknowledge answers. There may include such things as obeying your parents, being helpful, and being kind). The Bible says Jesus was helpful. He made sick people well. He made blind people see. He fed 5000 people with the fish and loaves in a young boy’s lunch. Jesus was kind. He was a friend to all of the people around Him.

When Jesus became a man, there came a time for Him to start preaching, teaching, and healing. These were some of the things God wanted Jesus to do. That day Jesus was with a large group of people. We know that God was very proud of His son. The Bible tells us a voice came down from the clouds saying, “This is my son, in whom I am well pleased.”

God loved Jesus very much, and Jesus wanted to please God. God loves you very much too, and we should want to please Him. The Bible tells us how to do that. It says, “You are God’s children, whom He loves, so you should try to be like Him.” (Ephesians 5:7) (Pray asking God to help us be more like Him.)

Suggested Song: “Let Others See Jesus in You”

April 28
Good morning. (Open your Bible to Luke 2:52.) The last few weeks we have been learning from the Bible about Jesus as a young boy. Let’s read the verse one more time, and see if we can find one more way that Jesus grew. “Jesus increased in favor…with man.” That means Jesus was liked by and respected by the people around Him.”

Can you think of some people who were friends of Jesus, or maybe some people Jesus helped? (Acknowledge responses. These may include Mary and Martha and Lazarus, the disciples, Zaccheus, the four men who brought their friend to Jesus so he could walk again, and the little children.) These people all loved and respected Jesus.

(Re-read Luke 5:52) “Jesus increased in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.” Jesus was God’s son. God wanted Jesus to study and learn. He wanted Jesus to grow strong and tall. He wanted Jesus to learn to please God, and He wanted Him to be friends to all people. God wants us to grow in those some ways. (Pray asking God to help us to grow like Jesus did.)

Suggested Song: “Jesus Is All the World to Me”

May Theme – Worship
May 5
I am glad you are here with us today. This month we are going to talk about worship. Worship is a time to celebrate God’s love for us. We are going to talk about celebrating through singing, through remembering, through prayer, and through fellowship.

What is your favorite song to sing in church? (Acknowledge responses, which may include such songs as “Jesus Loves Me” and “Oh How I Love Jesus”.) Did you know that the Bible tells us many times how important music is? David loved music, and he wrote, “Break forth and sing for joy, and sing praises unto God.” (Psalms 98:4-6) In the New Testament we read, “Speak to one another in psalms and hymns, singing, and making melody with your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19)

The next time we sing a song in church, or whenever you are listening to music about God and His world, remember that you are making God very happy. (Pray thanking God for music.)

Suggested Song: “He Keeps Me Singing”

May 12
Do you know what today is? (Acknowledge birthdays, etc.) This is Mother’s Day. Did you know that your mother remembers what time you were born? She knows when you took your first step. She knows the first word you said. She knows the first food you ever ate. She remembers what you wore on the first day of school, and when you lost your first tooth. Your mother thinks about you all of the time – when she is shopping, when she is cooking, when she is working, as soon as she opens her eyes in the morning, and the last thing before she falls asleep at night. She loves you very much.

(Have your Bible open to Luke 2) Mary was Jesus’ mother. She was very much like your mother. We read in the Bible about the birth of Jesus. What were some special things that happened about that time? (Acknowledge answers, which might include such things as shepherds, angels, wise men, and the star.) In that same part of the Bible, we can read about a time when Jesus was twelve years old. He went on a trip to the Temple. Mary and Joseph were afraid Jesus might have gotten lost, so they went looking for Him.
They found Jesus teaching the people in the Temple about God.

After both of these times, the Bible tells us something very special about Mary. It says, “Mary treasured all of these things, and remembered them in her heart” (Luke 5:19) (Pray thanking God for mothers who love us.)

Suggested Song: “Gentle Mary Laid Her Child”

May 19
Good morning. We are talking about ways to show God we love Him. We have talked about singing, and about remembering. Today let’s talk about prayer.

When are some times you might want to pray? (Acknowledge answers, which might include such things as mealtimes, bedtime, when you are afraid, and when you want to thank God for something.)

(Open your Bible to Luke 22). Did you know Jesus prayed too? There was a time when Jesus had to make some very hard choices. The Bible tells us He asked His disciples to go to a quiet place with Him to pray. Then He went on further by Himself and asked God to help Him make good choices.

Sometimes we may want to thank God for something. Sometimes we might want to ask Him to help us make good choices. We might even just want to talk to Him. We can talk to God about anything. We may want to ask a friend or a grown-up to pray with us, or we may want to talk to God alone. Whenever or however we pray, God will always hear our prayers. (Pray thanking God for listening to us and for loving us.)

Suggested Song: “Sweet Hour of Prayer”

May 26
We have been talking about worship. That is what we call times when we celebrate God’s love for us. We have talked about singing, remembering, and prayer. Today we are going to talk about fellowship.

How do you know when someone loves you? (Acknowledge responses, which might include such things as spending time with us, giving us gifts, being kind to us, and just feeling good to be around them).

There was a doctor who took one chewable vitamin tablet home to his son every day from work. The pill did not cost much. It was not a fancy present. It did come in different colors and different shapes. It probably did not even taste very good. But the pill was very special to the son because it was his father’s way of saying, “I thought about you today”.

When we sit in church with our family or friends, when we sing together, and when we just feel special being together while we talk about God, that is called fellowship. (Open your Bible to Psalm 122:1) The Bible says, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.” Fellowship is another way for us to say to God, “I am thinking about you today.”

(Pray thanking God for churches)

Suggested Song: “Sweet, Sweet Spirit”

June Theme – Traveling
June 2
Now that you are out of school for the summer, I was thinking about some things you might be planning to do. Some of you may be going to visit your grandparents. You might be going to camp. You might be doing some special things like swimming or going to the zoo. You might even have a long trip planned with your family. Some of you may travel by car, some by boat, some by train, or some by airplane.

Did you know people in the Bible traveled too? (Open your Bible to Genesis 11). The Bible tells us Abraham was a very rich man. We know that he owned a lot of land. Abraham lived in a city called Ur. In that city most of the houses were built out of stone. They often had two stories, and sometimes they had a porch or a patio. Abraham’s house may have been quite large.

One day God told Abraham to pack up his bags, close up his house, and get ready for a long trip. Abraham was to take his whole family with him. He tried to think of everything he might need for the trip. He packed tents, food, water, and clothes. He did not want to forget anything. Just as he thought he was all ready to leave, Abraham remembered that he did not have one of the most important things. He did not know where he was going, and he did not have a map. When Abraham asked God where he was supposed to go, God said, “Just go, and I will show you the way.”

God always knows the way, and He will always go with us wherever we go. (Pray thanking God for leading us, and for loving us.)

Suggested Song – “Trust and Obey”

June 9
Good morning. Last week we talked about a man who went on a trip without a map. Today we are going to talk about another traveler in the Bible. (Open your Bible to Genesis 6.) This man is Noah. Do you remember what kind of transportation Noah used? God showed Noah how to build an ark. That was a kind of boat.

When Noah went on his trip, he took his family plus two of every kind of animal there was. The Bible tells us there had been many things going on in the world that made God very sad. People had been making choices that did not please God. So God sent a great flood. Then God took Noah and his family and the animals, and He gave the world a chance to start all over again.

When the flood was over, God sent a rainbow. Rainbows are a great reminder to us that God is always with us, and that He will always give us another chance to make choices that please God. (Pray thanking God for forgiving us and for second chances.)

Suggested Song: “Amazing Grace”

June 16
Today is Father’s Day. This is a time for us to tell our fathers just how special they are to us.

Can you tell me some things your father does for you? (Acknowledge answers, which might include such things as playing ball, getting ice cream, and reading stories.) Your father also buys your food, gives you a place to live, and keeps you safe. Your father takes good care of you, and he gives you everything you need. He would do anything he could for you. He loves you very much.

(Have your Bible open to Genesis 1). God is our father too. The Bible says God made everything there is, and God made us. We need food, so God made fruits and vegetables. We need water, so God made rivers and lakes and rain. We need people to love us and to teach us, so God made fathers and mothers, grandparents, brothers and sisters, and teachers. God takes good care of us. He gives us everything we need. He would do anything for us. He loves us very much.

(Pray thanking God for caring for us, and for giving us fathers)

Suggested Song: “This is My Father’s World”

June 23
Good morning. You have been out of school for several weeks now and I hope you are enjoying your summer.

We have been talking about people in the Bible who traveled. Today let’s talk about Moses. (Open your Bible) Moses spent much of his life traveling. At one time Moses had been running from his enemies in Egypt. He decided to go up on a mountain to rest for a while. When he got there, he found a big surprise waiting for him. It was a burning bush. While Moses was looking at the bush, he heard God call his name.

When we travel we can see and hear God too. We see oceans, mountains, clouds, and stars. We hear the wind, the rain, songs of the birds, and laughter. These all remind us that God is very near.

(Pray thanking God for showing His love to us.)

Suggested Song: “God Is So Good”

June 30
Good morning. I hope you have been having a great time with your friends and families this summer.

This month we have talked about a man who traveled without a map, a man who took a long trip on a boat, and a man who took a trip up a mountain. Today let’s talk about some brothers who went on a trip. (Open your Bible to Genesis 27.)

Joseph had eleven brothers, but he was his father’s favorite son. His father did special things just for him. He even had a coat of many colors made just for him. But Joseph’s brothers were very jealous. They decided to get even. So they made a plan to send Joseph far away. They even told their father that Joseph was dead. That was a very sad day.

Joseph ended up in a country far away from home. He thought he was all alone. He was in a place he did not want to go. He lived and worked with people he did not want to be with. He was doing a job he did not want to do.

Many years later Joseph got to see his brothers and his father again. This was a very happy day for all of them. God had been in control the whole time.

(Pray thanking God for being in control, even when we do not understand.)
