State Youth Bible Drill
June 19
National Youth Bible Drill
First Baptist Church
Covington, Louisiana |
The purpose of Youth Bible Drill is to lead youth to develop skills in using their Bible: locating books and verses and locating passages dealing with doctrinal and ethical concerns. It is an event for youth in grades 7 through 9 (click here for High School Bible Drill information for 10-12th graders.) As they work together preparing for the drill, the teenagers are increasing their knowledge of the Scripture, their love for the Bible and becoming comfortable in using the Bible to find answers to problems or questions they or their friends may encounter. Another major benefit of Youth Bible Drill is that they also gain poise and confidence as they respond to the calls with speed and accuracy.
The Youth Bible Drill is an exciting way for teenagers to learn to use their Bibles to meet the challenges of life. It involves competition, but that is not what Youth Bible Drill is all about. If teenagers can locate a verse quickly, learn to answer a question using Scripture, and become familiar enough with key verses that they can locate them from a few words-those teens are winners!
Youth can quickly become focused on winning the drill. It is important for leaders to remind them of the more profound goal-to learn to use God’s Word to make a difference for today and tomorrow.
Youth Bible Drill can be part of a weekly discipleship group or can be a special weekly, one-hour activity. Youth who are members of a seventh, eighth, or ninth grade youth discipleship group are eligible to participate. If your church does not have a Youth Discipleship Program, youth may participate in the drill with the help of an adult church member.
Students in 7th through 9th grades who are sponsored by a Kentucky Baptist Convention are eligible to participate.
A drill leader (conductor), three regular point judges, a bonus point judge, and a timekeeper are used. Each judge will score all participants, maximum of 12. In scoring, when there’s a question, the judging team will give participants the benefit of the doubt. The conductor is the only one that confirms a memory response by “That is Correct” or “Please try again” (one extra chance only). If a driller cannot give the proper response, the conductor will ask the group to respond in unison. If the group is a mixed group (KJV, NIV), the conductor will give the correct response. All other judging issues are the responsibility of the judges and the conductor will refrain from any comments of any kind in reference to mistakes during the drill.
Regular point judges will indicate a correct response by leaving the box blank. Judges will place a number (1-5) in the appropriate box to indicate a mistake. Each regular point judge will score the entire group.
Bonus Point Judge – on each call, the participant who steps out first scores one bonus point. In case of a tie, bonus points are given to each. The judge scoring bonus points will place a 1 in the appropriate box. If a person receiving a bonus point makes a mistake, cancel it with an X.
*NOTE: Regular points are totaled & averaged then bonus points added. To assist in judging, no more than twelve youth should participate in one drill. Four judges plus a timekeeper are needed. Three judges will score regular points and one judge will score bonus points.
Regular points: Score each participant as an individual. Judges scoring regular points may find it easier to mark only mistakes. When a participant makes a mistake, write 1-5 in the corresponding box on the score sheet. If two mistakes in one call are made, deduct points for only one mistake.
Bonus Points: on each call, the participant who steps out first scores one bonus point. The judge scoring bonus points will place a check mark in the box for the call in which the bonus point has been earned. If two or more step out at the same time, the judge will score a bonus point for each.
No points (regular or bonus) are given if a participant:
- Fails to step out within 8 seconds
- Gives an incorrect response. This includes any participant who raises his hand indicating an incorrect reference.
- Fails to stand straight or keep his eyes on the drill leader until the command “start” is given.
- Steps forward before the index finger is on the correct response.
- Fails to handle the Bible according to the instructions or abuses the Bible.
Computing a Final Score
(1) To determine regular points, one each score sheet, deduct the participant’s amount of errors from 100. Each drill has five calls.
Locating Books Drill point value: (3) three
Scripture Searching Drill point value: (3) three
Identifying Verses Drill point value: (4) four
Doctrinal Drill point value: (5) five
Bible Answers Drill point value: (5) five
(2) Total the regular points from each score sheet for each participant, adding bonus points to obtain a final score.
Example: Each judge could potentially score 100 points per participant; therefore a participant with a perfect score could have 300 points plus a possible 25 bonus points for a grand total of 325.
In conducting a Youth Bible Drill, conductors will use the following commands:
“ATTENTION” Stand straight; one foot not extended in front of the other, eyes focused on the leader until the command “start,” Bible held at side (in either hand), with Bible spine down, and palm under the Bible.
“PRESENT BIBLE” Bring Bible to waistline. A driller who searches with his right hand should hold the Bible on his left hand with Genesis down and his right hand resting flat on top of the Bible. A driller who searches with his left hand should hold the Bible on his right hand, Genesis up, with left hand resting flat on the front cover of the Bible. The driller’s thumb and fingers should not extend around the sides of the Bible. Following “Present Bibles,” the leader announces the call. The call is stated only once, unless a driller requests that it be repeated.
“START” This command is the signal for drillers to begin searching. In the Book Drill, the index finger may be placed upon any verse in that book. In other drills, the driller finds the verse, places his index finger on the actual verse called (first part, if verse is split), and steps forward.
“TIME” A timekeeper calls out the word ‘time’ at the end of eight seconds. All drillers stop searching. (When time is called in the Bible Answers Drill, instruct the drillers to close their Bibles.) The leader will call on one driller to respond.
“ATTENTION” Drillers return to their original positions, Bibles held at side, and ready for the next call.
1. Fails to STEP FORWARD within 8 seconds.
2. Gives an INCORRECT RESPONSE (includes any driller who raises a hand indicating an error). It is an error to step out, then step back, then step out again even if it is in the allotted time.
3. Fails to STAND STRAIGHT, keep his EYES ON THE CONDUCTOR, or BEGINS ANY MOVEMENT before the command “Start” is given.
4. Steps forward before the INDEX FINGER is on the correct response.
5. Fails to handle the Bible according to instructions or ABUSES THE BIBLE.
* NOTE: At each drill level, scores are totaled, and then averaged before bonus points are added.
The scriptures for Steps to Salvation Drill, What We Believe Drill, and Key Biblical Passage Drill are found on the scripture card “High School Bible Drill Verses (Cycle 1).”
A complete drill consists of 5 types of drills with calls in each type. The Bible is used throughout the drill. The types of drills are listed, along with the number of calls and point value of each call.
Book Drill (5 calls, 3 points per call)
The leader calls the name of any book in the Bible. At the command “Start,” participants begin searching for the book that was called. A participant steps forward after he has located the book and places his index finger on any verse in the book. When called upon, the driller should be able to name: (1) the book, which immediately precedes the book called, (2) the book called, and (3) the book, which immediately follows the book, called.
Scripture Searching Drill (5 calls, 3 points per call)
The leader announces a Scripture reference to be found. Scripture searching drills are taken from any part of the Bible. A participant must locate the Scripture reference and place his index finger on the verse before stepping forward. When called upon, he must read the verse and state the Scripture reference.
Identifying Verses Drill (5 calls, 4 points per call)
The leader quotes a part of a verse taken from the official list of verses. It may be any part of a verse. A leader, however, should quote enough of a verse to provide the participants with a reasonable clue. A participant must correctly locate the verse and place his index finger on the verse before he steps forward. When called upon, he must be able to read the entire verse and state the correct Scripture reference.
In your church drill, all youth will probably be using the same Bible translation. However, in the Associational, and State Drills, some youth will be using the King James Version while others will be using the New International Version of the Bible. In the Identifying Verses Drill, explain to the youth that the caller will say a phrase from the Identifying Verses list as translated in the King James Version, followed by the same phrase as translated in the New International Version before you give the command “Start.”
Doctrinal Drill (5 calls, 5 points per call)
The leader announces a doctrinal statement taken from the official list of doctrinal drill verses. A participant must correctly locate the verse listed with that doctrinal statement and place his index finger on the verse before he steps forward. When called upon, he must be able to: (1) recite the doctrinal statement as listed in the official list, (2) read the verse, and (3) state the Scripture reference.
Bible Answers Drill (5 calls, 5 points per call)
The leader announces a question taken from the official Bible answers drill verses. Before he steps forward, a participant must correctly locate the verse listed that answers the question. When time is called, the leader will instruct the drillers to close their Bibles. The driller must be able to: (1) quote the question, (2) recite the correct verse, and (3) state the Scripture reference.
Church Drill - Date set by your church. A sample church drill is available on line at here. To advance to the next level, the Associational Drill, a participant must score at least 180 points (total from all four judges) in the church Youth Bible Drill. A church may send all qualified persons to the Associational Drill.
Associational Drill - Please contact your local associational office for the location and date of the drill. An association may send all qualified persons to the State Drill. To qualify, youth must score at least 225 points (total from all four judges) in the Associational Youth Bible Drill.
State Drill - Each youth who has a perfect score (300 points - not counting bonus points) in the State Drill will win a State Perfect Score Award. The State Winner will also receive a special award. Once a Youth Bible Drill Participant wins the State Drill, he/she is ineligible to win the State Drill again. However, a State winner may return and drill again at the State Level (if qualified) to try for the three-year reward and for the State Perfect Score Award.
Drill times on Saturday will be determined in advance.
Participants will be responsible for their own expenses to and at the State Drill.
National Drill - The State Bible Drill Winner will represent Kentucky Baptists at the National Youth Bible Drill/Speakers Tournament. The Kentucky Baptist Convention will contribute up to $500 towards the cost of the National event for the High School Bible Drill winner.
Churches in Kentucky have the option of using either the King James Version or the New International Version Bibles. Churches using the King James Version should use the KJV Drill Bible (Lifeway order No. 0-8798-1600-7) and churches using the New International Version should use the “burgundy” Bible from the International Bible Society item #172. (Lifeway has discontinued carrying the NIV bible drill Bibles). The above Bibles will be used at State and National Events.
