Kentucky Changers

Kentucky Changers goes way beyond the typical "summer camp" experience. Participants are challenged to become "On Mission" Christians as they live out their faith while getting their hands dirty doing hard work.

Modeled after the Southern Baptist youth mission endeavor, World Changers, Kentucky Changers equips students and adults to provide home maintenance and repair services to the needy throughout Kentucky.

During these projects, Changers discover that missions is a lifestyle, not a location.

About 80 volunteers served in 1994 when Kentucky Changers launched. The group helped about 10 Hopkinsville residents. Last year 1,150 students and adults representing 70 churches in five states served through Kentucky Changers, completing 82 projects in five communities.

Details

How Does It Work?

Kentucky Changers coordinators work with local churches, governments and organizations to identify residents in need. Projects are planned months in advance and organized by an experienced construction supervisor so materials and equipment will be on site and ready when the Kentucky Changers teams arrive. The construction supervisor works with other skilled adults to ensure the quality of the work and the safety of the volunteers. Each team has a crew chief, assistant crew chief and other adults to assist and supervise the work (click the "Adult Volunteers" tab below for more information.) Residents are never charged a fee for the work.

Coordinated by the Kentucky Baptist Convention Baptist Men on Mission Department, Kentucky Changers is funded primarily by the participants themselves who pay for the privilege to serve.

Accommodations for the week usually are local schools. Breakfast and evening meals are prepared by Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers. Lunches are served on site by Kentucky Baptists serving through their congregations or associations.

Additional funding comes from many sources including Kentucky Baptists’ gifts through the Cooperative Program and the Eliza Broadus State Missions Offering. Donors in the project communities also provide significant support.

Who can be a Changer?

To participate in the summer projects, students must have at least completed the seventh grade. Young adults 18 and older are welcome to serve on any Kentucky Changers project. During the summer projects, teams of "Collegiate Changers" serve alongside younger Kentucky Changers on a project of their own. College enrollment is not a requirement to be a Collegiate Changer, and groups of young-adult Changers can register as a church group, campus ministry or as individuals.

Important Information for Pastors/Leaders

The Kentucky Changers experience begins weeks before students arrive on site. Each Changer is expected to complete the mission-preparation process.

With personal commitment and guidance from church and ministry leaders, the process prepares volunteers:

Corporately

Kentucky Changers is a team effort from start to finish. An understanding of teamwork is vital, as participants will work on crews with students from other churches during their project week.

Spiritually

Each year, Kentucky Changers publishes "The Blueprint," an "On Mission" development guide. The Blueprint is one of the primary tools for getting Changers ready to serve. It also helps them stay on track spiritually during and after the project. With a copy of the Bible, The Blueprint has everything needed for personal spiritual preparation. Each participant is expected to work through the guide and to bring it along during the project.

Physically

Replacing roofs, installing siding or building a ramp is not easy. Participants must be physically prepared for hard work. Each group is expected to plan and perform a local, hands-on, mission project in their hometown before the project week. (Need ideas? E-mail us at kychangers@kybaptist.org.)

A special opportunity for high-school seniors and young adults …

Each year 8-10 spiritually mature young adults are selected to serve as the Kentucky Changers Ministry Team. Members help Kentucky Changers leaders set up at each project site and provide crucial behind-the-scenes assistance. They also serve as mentors to younger Changers throughout the week. Ministry team members should be involved in missions within their church or hometown. Team members must first complete an application available from and submitted to the Kentucky Changers home office.

To our pastors and ministry leaders …

Through Kentucky Changers, the Kentucky Baptist Convention provides you a ready-made missions experience for students and adults. We handle all the logistics and on-site supervision but your participation is vital to the success of this ministry effort.

If you need assistance or suggestions on how to get your Kentucky Changers team ready, please contact us:

Adult Volunteers

We need adult volunteers for all three of the week-long summer projects. If you are 21-years old or older and have skills in construction, or if you have your CDL to drive a school bus, you can sign up for the following positions:

Crew Chief

The crew chief is an adult volunteer who brings construction skills and experience to a Kentucky Changers Project. A crew chief commits to serve for a week as a Christian mentor for youth. Crew chiefs must complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office. Crew chiefs supervise 10 to 12 participants in completing a series of tasks on one or more work sites at a project.

Assistant Crew Chief

An assistant crew chief is an adult volunteer who brings construction skills and experience to work alongside the crew chief. Assistant crew chiefs must complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office. An assistant crew chief commits to serve for a week as a Christian mentor for youth. An assistant crew chief assists the crew chief in supervising 10 to 12 participants in completing a series of tasks on one or more work sites at a project. Assistant crew chiefs must be skilled enough to take charge of the group if necessary.

Construction Supervisor

The construction coordinator cannot oversee the work at each job site, nor can he or she give individual crew chiefs adequate support at all times. The role of the construction supervisor is to give on-site assistance to the construction coordinator. Each supervisor reports to the construction coordinator and oversees the work and activities of five crew chiefs. A construction supervisor must have construction skills in all areas and complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office.

Transportation Supervisor

The transportation supervisor coordinates each trip from the school to the job site and back. The transportation supervisor will provide maps for all crews with the best route highlighted. A Transportation Supervisor must complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office.

Bus Driver

Drivers must have a valid CDL license with passenger endorsement. Drivers transport 1-4 crews to the job sites, then stay and work at a site until time to return crews to the school. Drivers must complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office.

Ministry Team

The Ministry Team will be a team of 6-9 members who are college age and will do a lot of the behind the scenes setting up and tearing down for Changers projects. Each team member will have a role in nightly worship and be on hand to lead devotion for youth groups as requested. Team members will serve along side the youth on the jobsite each day. The Ministry Team will serve as a role model and will be on hand to minister to students during free time each night. Ministry Team members must complete this application and submit it to the Kentucky Changers home office.
