Somerset—Kentucky Baptists with a fondness for motorcycles are needed to help form a new evangelistic outreach geared toward fellow bikers.
The Kentucky Baptist Bikers held its initial planning meeting at Sonny’s Restaurant in Somerset on April 6.
“We are not a club. We are a connection,” organizer Randy McPheron, director of missions at Rockcastle Baptist Association, said. “Our purpose is to connect bikers across the state for missions and ministry.”
Kentucky Baptist Bikers is looking to hold two rides this year, as well as starting a ministry that helps stranded bikers.
This spring, “A Ride for Missions Awareness” will take bikers on tour of Kentucky Baptist organizations, such as Sunrise Children’s Services and Oneida Baptist Institute, and call attention to the spiritual and financial support required to maintain their Kingdom work.
A fall ride called, “A Ride for Revival,” takes bikers on a cross-state tour beginning in Pikeville and ending in Paducah. At four points, local Baptist associations will coordinate revival services with guest preachers and music.
Through the “Bikers Helping Bikers Ministry,” McPheron hopes to create a network of Kentucky Baptists who can meet the needs of stranded bikers and open doors to sharing the gospel. The process of building the network will take time, he said, but the goal is to have teams of willing volunteers who are able to provide gas, trailer transportation or mechanical help within the county they live.
An avid biker, McPheron said there’s one common trait among this affinity group: They like to talk and they appreciate a good story.
“We want this to be about intentional evangelism,” he said. “Fellowship is great, but we want guys on the back of motorcycles that are discipled and prepared to tell people about Christ.”
