Lawrence Smith has been Communications Director for the Kentucky Baptist Convention since 2022. He has more than 40 years of experience in journalism, public and media relations. Lawrence was an Emmy-winning political reporter for WDRB News in Louisville. He has also worked as a reporter, anchor, producer and news executive at TV stations in Louisville, Lexington, Knoxville, TN and Houston, TX. In 2015, Lawrence received the KBC’s Integrity in Journalism Award. During his career, he has also served Southern Baptists as VP for Communications and Dean of Students at Southern Seminary, and as Broadcast Associate at First Baptist Houston. Lawrence and his wife Garnetta have been married for more than 40 years. They have two adult sons.

Lawrence helps churches as editor of the KBC news service Kentucky Today, which keeps Kentucky Baptists informed about current events and tells the stories of how KBC churches are sharing the gospel and loving their neighbors. Lawrence also speaks to churches and other groups on the topics of media relations and crisis communications. He also oversees the KBC’s advocacy of public policy issues important to Kentucky Baptists, and helps promote the convention’s events and training opportunities designed to help churches be even more effective in their ministries.
