Pineville—Roy Lucas, professor of Bible at Clear Creek Baptist Bible College and pastor of First Baptist Church of Loyall, authored an article titled “Tarsus” that appears in the Spring issue of Biblical Illustrator, a quarterly resource tool produced by LifeWay.

“Tarsus” explains the Apostle Paul’s relationship to the city. The article also looks at the geography of Tarsus, its history and culture. And, it focuses on archeological findings in the area.

Lucas’ article expounds on Paul’s description of Tarsus as “no ordinary city.” Although Paul was born in Tarsus, he was not raised there, but returned to the area later in life, Lucas notes.

Tarsus, a city divided by a river, was the capital of the Roman province of Cilcia. Due to its geography, it was an important land and sea trade route, and the city was known for its education, wealth and linen, he explains in the article.

Today, ancient Tarsus is buried under its modern counterpart. However, archaeologists have discovered such finds as a Western outpost, a Roman theater and St. Paul’s well.

“The desire to train men to be pastors and missionaries” is what brought Lucas to Clear Creek 16 years ago, he said. He also has been pastor of Loyall First Baptist for 16 years.

Originally from Oklahoma, Lucas received his two bachelor’s degrees from Oklahoma Baptist University, and a master of divinity, a master of religious education, and his PhD from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Lucas has published seven additional articles with Biblical Illustrator on John’s writing style, angels as heralds, Paul’s oratorical style, the Decapolis, Cana of Galilee, and a book review on “Bible and the Land.” (WR)
