This time of year is such an important season for ministries and individuals. Ironically, it has nothing to do with the holidays and everything to do with end of the fiscal year. I know that the last thing you want to talk or think about today is the end of the fiscal year; yet, just a few minutes of consideration could change the world.
In 2014, a record high of $250 billion was given to non-profits. Almost half of that $250 billion was given to religious causes and organizations. Giving Tuesday is a real thing. GivingTuesday.org alone raised over $116 million in 2015, which was an increase of over 150 percent from 2014.
We live in a surprisingly generous culture. While it may not be obvious to you, generosity is everywhere. Millennials have bought whole-heartedly into the transformation economy. The existence of companies like TOMS shoes, Warby Parker glasses, or Smile squared toothbrushes attests to the thriving transformation economy. These companies match your purchase by giving that same product to someone who is in need.
Who has God placed in your sphere of influence—right in front of you—who can give to you generously? Who do you know who might give generously to you or your organization?
Pastors and ministry leaders, do you have any vision for this season? You must ask the people around you to give to your ministry. You cannot afford to miss this opportunity. Donor development and follow-up is vitally important to the success of any organization. Share your story so that donors know why they are supporting you. Ask them if their employer matches gifts. Spread the word through letters, emails, social media and Giving Tuesday outlets.
Friends, have you thought though how to give with wisdom? Solomon cautions to not be the sluggard but that “the righteous gives and does not hold back” (Proverbs 21:26). Please consider giving to your church. Please consider giving of your time, sacrificing your gifts for someone in need, or donating unwanted things before you get more at Christmas. You may be able to vitally support a ministry just by donating what you have in your house that you don’t use or need. ’Tis the season, are you ready for the end of the fiscal year? Your giving can help advance the gospel and change the world.
